Black men portrayed as violent and can be alienated by the media → More likely to face Symbolic Annihilation! = Black, homosexual women will face the most Symbolic Annihilation in the media! - Young, Black males being over-represented in the media (knife crime, violence, drug culture etc → Moral panic and can create alienation)!

A

They found that Black, young men and boys are associated with Negative News Values.

Around 7/10 stories were related to some form of crime; they were presented as irrational and gang-related and the structural inequalities, in regards to Ethnic-Minority people,are not dealt with!

Sewell –> Black, young boys joined gang subcultures in education!

  • The focus on Black, Young boys are the perpetrators of knife crime!

They said that Moral Panics result from media stereotyping of Black people!

This can be seen in the ‘Sus Law’, Disproportionate ‘Stop and Searches’ and the death of George Floyd, which led to the BLM protests!

He found 3 groups that are portrayed and represented as being the ‘biggest threat’, especially in UK media:

  1. Immigrants - ‘Numbers’ = EG: ‘Stop the Boats’
  2. Refugees and Asylum Seekers - Abusers of the welfare state + ‘Stealing people’s jobs and livelihoods’ = EG: Rwanda Bill!
  3. Muslims - ‘Seen as the Enemy Within’ (Especially after 9/11 and the 7/7 bombings)! EG: After 9/11, the number of Muslim hate crimes spiked to around 500 (2001) in the USA and there were also attacks on mosques!

A

They found that the wearing of the Hijab and the Niqab is portrayed as oppressive and seen as an example of misogyny. This means that structural issues around Muslim women are ignored!

This links to the French Ban on Niqabs and Face Veils in 2020 and the Negative language used by Journalists regarding this situation!

  1. Islam was portrayed as ‘dangerous’

  3. There was a clash portrayed and represented between the ‘Western world and the Muslim world’
  4. Islam was represented as a major threat to the British way of life (the focus on Sharia Law, which is the Islamic Legal System, vs British Law)! = Different laws, and norms and values!
