Q

Explain what the ‘Cuts to Lone Parent Benefits’ was!

Was this a more Conservative Policy for a Labour Government? - Explain its impact!

A

Blair’s government made severe cuts to the benefits that were paid to lone parent families –> They believed that single parents should go to work whilst the government worked to ensure that there was cheap or free childcare!

This was definitely a more Conservative Policy for a Labour Government = Similar to the New Right approach! –> Links to the idea of trying to shape a specific, ideal family!

Q

Explain what ‘Working Family Tax Credits’ was!

A

This replaced the Married Man’s Tax Allowance = It removed a tax incentive for couples to get married and to stay married; it also provided a tax allowance for families with children!

This was also designed to encourage both parents to work, rather then to incentivise the other to stay at home (usually the woman).

Q

What are the Evaluating Points for New Labour Governments (1997-2010), regarding their social policy that focused on the Family?

A
  • They made legislative changes to acknowledge family diversity, but they did not create it! They still stuck, however, to the traditional New Right idea that the nuclear family was the idealistic view of the family!
  • Perhaps they did not go as far as they should have done = The Civil Partnership Act did not bring about true equality and introduce gay marriage (which was later introduced in 2013)!
  • They massively helped to improve gay rights!
