Med Surg-Quiz 12 Flashcards
5 layers
Epidermis
anchors epidermis to superficial dermis layer
Basement Membrane
2 layers
Dermis
anchors dermis to underlying structures
Subcutaneous tissue
No blood vessels or nerve tissue Regenerates every 4-6 weeks Keratin= regulates water intake and output Melanocyte= pigment producing cells Photochemical rxn to produce vitamin D
Epidermis
Layer where new cells are produced by mitosis. As new one forms, it displaces the previous one upward, thereby starting the epidermal shedding process.
Basement Membrane
Vascular; papillae project into epidermis and provide nutrients via diffusion
Fibrous and connective tissue
Lymphatic vessels
Description of Dermal Content
superficial layer; blood vessels and nerves, loose connective tissues, fibroblasts, macrophages, and mast cells
Papillary Dermis
deep layer; hair, eccrine (sweat) and sebaceous (oil -secreting) glands, dense connective tissues, nerves, blood vessels
Reticular Dermis
Connective tissue (fascia)
Fat
Blood vessels
Nerves
Subcutaneous Tissue
itching
Pruritis
hives
Uticaria
Hair color changes
Thinning/ absence of hair
Skin laxity
Loss of elastin & collagen fibers (wrinkles)
Decreased subcutaneous fat (wrinkles and insulation)
Changes in pigmentation (age spots)
Rete ridges flatten out and decrease nutrient supply to epidermis
aging
affects mainly the epidermis. Causes sunburn.
UVB
affects mainly the dermis.
UVA
Chronic, allergy related
Present during infancy; usually self-limiting with increased age
Red, oozing, hardened rash
Tints skin brown
Hardens skin
Localizes to: face, neck, eyelids, dorsal hands and feet, and flexor surfaces
Atopic Dermatitis
Acute or chronic
Chemical, mechanical, physical or biological irritant
Example: latex, wool, nickel, adhesives, etc.
Pruritis
Redness
Edema
Typically resolves within 3 weeks
Contact Dermatitis
Result of Venous Insufficiency Dry, thinned skin Edema Tissue Hypoxia Hemosiderin staining Tissue necrosis
Static Dermatitis
Used for venous insufficiencies and ulcers Application of medicated gauze Lower leg is wrapped spirally Allowed to dry; soft cast formation Left on 1-2 weeks Reduces edema and promotes healing
Unna Boots
Physical “barriers” to lymph flow.
Define the lymphotomes
Able to be “crossed” with external cueing
Anastomoses & Watersheds
