Med Surg-Quiz 10 Flashcards
spasm of the Sternocleidomastoid; Presents as: rotation away from and lateral flexion toward the affected side.
Torticollis
a decrease in the size of a passage or opening; such as the spinal foramen, or spinal canal.
Stenosis
progressive deterioration of fibrous layers and the nucleus pulposus. Brings vertebrae closer together, decreasing the interforaminal space (causing stenosis)
Degenerative Disc Disease- (DDD)
any change in the shape of the annulus that causes it to protrude beyond its natural aligned position
Herniation
nucleus material shifts into the layers of the annulus or ligaments
Protrusion
rupture of nuclear material into the vertebral canal
Prolapse
Results from pinching on a nerve and nerve root. Radiating pain down the affected extremity
Radiculopathy
Used to alleviate spinal stenosis. Removal of the lamina- the connecting parts of the vertebra.
Laminectomy
To fix a compression fracture in the spine
Balloon Kyphoplasty
Fracture of pars interarticularis (Connects the facet joints)
Spondylolysis
slippage of one vertebra on another. Can be anterior or posterior slip. (Typically anterior). *Extension precautions!! Think of the mechanics… extension pushes the vertebra forward. Not good…can cause severe damage. Two etiologies known:
Degenerative
Isthmic
Spondylolisthesis
lateral curvature of the spine
Scoliosis
unilateral elevation of the innominate bones
Sacroiliac Dysfunction: Upslip
rotation of the sacrum; anterior tilt, posterior tilt or left/right rotation
Sacroiliac Dysfunction: Torsion
