Liquid vs solid - always ask
Delivery vehicle: syringe (most accurate), measuring cup, calibrated dropper, use of nipple to let infant suck

Liquid

A

Infants: use syringe, semi-reclining position, put syringe along side of tongue and give small amount, wait for them to swallow
Older infants, toddler, school aged: med cup once able to drink from cup
Not recommended to add medicine to bottles - but will happen
Give choice: mom admin? Flavor? Drink after? Sticker?

IM injections

A

VL: preferred for infants (most developed)
Deltoid: >18 mo (VL still easier till 2+)
VG: another good site
Hold, make sure they stay still: infant = back, hold legs and arms, quick, careful with bandaid, keep injection out of sight
Size: 25 mm = infant; 25 - 32 = toddler; 38 -51 older children
Volume: smaller infants only 0.5 mL; 1 mL usually max for small kids and older infants

Optic, otic, nasal

A

Gain cooperation
Eye drops: supine, put in nasal corner of eye for infants
Ear drops: <3 = down and back; place drops deep in ear without contaminating, disposable ear speculum in canal and give drops that way, lay on side for a few minutes - distractions
