Mechanism of Action Lipid Meds Flashcards
What is the mechanism of action for Statins (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors)?
Block synthesis of cholesterol in the liver by
competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase activity
(inhibit the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis)
What do Statins decrease/increase? (3)
Decreases levels of LDL by 25% to 65%
Modest decreases in triglycerides (10% to 40%)
very modest increases in HDL (5% to 17%) may occur.
Which lipid lowering med is derived from fish oil?
Omega 3 fatty acid
What do PCSK9 Inhibitors decrease? (3)
LDL
Cholesterol
Triglycerides
What do bile acid sequestrants decrease/increase? (3)
Decrease LDL
May increase triglycerides
Slight increase in HDL
Which lipid lowering med inhibits the release of free fatty acid from adipose tissue?
Niacin (Nicotinic Acid/Vitamin B3)
What lipid lowering med are monoclonal antibodies?
PCSK9 Inhibitors
What do fibrates decrease/increase? (4)
Lower total cholesterol
Lower triglycerides
Lower LDL levels
Elevate HDL
What lipid lowering med reduce smooth muscle cell changes?
Statins
What lipid lowering med inhibits lipolysis in adipose tissue?
fibrates
What lipid lowering med reduce proteins associated with inflammation?
statins
Which lipid lowering med increases the rate of triglyceride removal from plasma?
Niacin
What lipid lowering med reduces inflammatory cells inside plaque?
Statins
What lipid lowering meds work in the small intestine to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol? (2)
Cholesterol absorption inhibitors
Bile acid sequestrants
Which lipid lowering med decreases triglyceride synthesis?
Fibrates
What lipid lowering med stabilizes the endothelium?
Statins
What does Niacin decrease/increase? (4)
Lower total cholesterol
Lower triglyceride
Lower LDL levels
Elevate HDL
What lipid lowering med BINDS with cholesterol in the small intestine, inhibiting absorption, and thus excreted in stool?
Bile acid sequestrants
What lipid lowering med reduces friction in the bloodflow?
Statins
What is a protein produced by the liver that plays a role in regulating LDL?
PCSK9
What lipid lowering med can cause an increase in liver enzymes?
Statins
What do bile acid sequestrants promote/enhance?
By promoting an increase in bile acid excretion, they enhance the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids by the liver
What lipid lowering meds block/inhibit cholesterol synthesis? (2)
Statins
Fibrates
What levels do omega 3 fatty acids decrease?
triglycerides
