Low pressure at the stern will attract the stern towards the bank
Modes of steering on board
Hand steering, FU and NFU
Automatic pilot, track control and heading mode
ME’s
Thrusters
Emergency steering
Difference between FU and NFU steering
FU steering, the rudder will follow the command at the helm. 10Degrees to port will send the rudder to 10Degrees to port, and so forth
NFU steering, the rudder will move to port or stbd so long as the lever is held down. Once the lever is released, it will spring back to centre, and the rudder will remain at the angle achieved until counter helm is applied

Heading mode
Needs a Gyro to follow a predetermined heading
What affects stopping distance?
Vessel Shape beneath the waterline, presence of a bulb
Running gear
ME’s power

Interaction/squat
Current and sea state
What affects the turning circle?
Current and sea state
Speed moving ahead
Type of steering/running gear
Type of Rudder
Length of vessel/shape beneath the waterline
