International Maritime Organisation
- Empowered by the UN to develop maritime safety regulations and protect the marine environment

What is a convention?
Minimum set of internationally agreed upon standards. These are not Legislation at this stage
Once each country agrees to sign up to the IMO, they agree to take the provisions under these conventions into their own national legislation
