What is aggression?
intentially hurting or gaining advantage over another person without necessarily involvin physical injury
What are the 3 aspects to managing agressive behaviour?
prediction; prevention and intervention
What is a mental disorder defined as?
any mental illness; including personality disorder; learning diability– “however caused or manifested”
What does not count as mentally disordered under the mental health act?
dependence or use of alcohol or drugs; by acting as no prudent person would act
Whose consent should you have before implementing an emergency detention?
mental health officer
Although an emergency detention allows patient to be detained what does it not allow?
doesnt authorise treatment except emergency
How is the application for a compulsory treatment order created?
by a mental health officer supported by 2 medical reports- AMP and other(usually GP)
What are the non-drug approaches to the agressive patient?
use of distraction; seclusion; talking to patient
What is usually given for rapid tranquillisation?
lorazepam
What can lorazepam be combined with for tranquilisation?
haloperidol
What should be assessed in determining suicide intent using Beck’s scale?
isolation; timing (in relation to intervention); precautions against discovery or intervention; acting to gain help during/after attempt; final acts in anticipation of death; degree of planning; suicide note; overt communication of intent before act; purpose of attempt; expectations regarding fatality of act; conception of methods lethality; seirousness of attempt; ambivalence towards living; conception of reversibility; degreeof premeditation
What factors reduce the risk of suicide?
social support
What factors predict the repitition of deliberate self-harm?
previous deliberate self-harm; previous psych tx; substance misuse; personality disorder; criminal record; hx of violence; low social class; unemployment; age 25-54; single,divorced or separated
