What are the criteria for anorexia nervosa?
weight loss of 15% below normal/expected weight; self-induced wt loss; self-perception of being too fat with intrusive dread of fatness; widespread endocrine disorder

amenorrhoea- except if on OCP
What does widespread endocrine disorder in anorexia nervosa manifest as in males?
loss of sexual interest and potency
What happens if anorexia nervosa onset if pre-pubertal?
puberty is delayed or arrested
What are the criteria for bulimia nervosa?
recurrent episodes of overeating (2/week over 3 months); presistent preoccupation with eating; counteracts overeating by 1-vomiting; purging or starvation; self-perception of being too fat
What is an episode of bing-eating charactered by?
eating within 2 hours an amount of food that is larger than most people ould eat; feeling of lack of control over eating
What are binge-eating episodes associated with?
eating much more rapidly; eating until feeling uncomfortably full; eating large amount when not feeling physicallt hungry; eating alone due to embarrassment; feeling disgusted with oneself
What are the signs of bulimia nervosa?
caries; russel’s sign- on hands
When is the typical onset of anorexia nervosa?
pubertal onset: 7-15 years
What are the psychological risk factors for devleoping an eatin disorder?
low self-esteem; perfectionist; black and white thinking; adolescence; childhood abuse
What are the common comorbid conditions with eating disorders?
depression; OCD; substance misuse; DM
What are the effects of starvation on the brain?
loss of grey and white matter; increased compulsive behaviour; enhanced response to hedonic and nutrostat signals; reduced social skills; focus on food; poor conc and decision making; new learning stunted
What causes refeeding syndrome?
depletion of already inadequate store of nutrients which are used up as body starts to repair itself
What are the metabolic complications of starvation?
hypothermia; dehydration; electrolyte disturbance; hypogylcaemia; riased LFTs
