What is bipolar affective disorder?
2 or more eps in which patients mood has hypomania/mania and depression
What are repeated episodes of hypomania or mania only classfied as?
bipolar
What does the first episode of (hypo)mania on recurrent depression mean?
bipolar disorder not depression
What are the diagnostic criterai for a hypomanic episode?
elevated or irritable mood that is definitely abnormal for at least 4 days with at least 3 of the signs interfering with daily living
What are the signs of a hypomanic ep?
increased activity; talkativess; sexual energy; difficulty concentrating; decreased need for sleep; mild spending sprees
What are the criteria for a manic episode?
mood must be elevated, expansive or irritable and abnormal; at least 1 wek and 3 of the signs which interfere with daily living
What are the signs of manic episode?
increased activity; talkativeness; flight of ideas or racing; loss of normal social inhibitinos; decreased need for sleep; grandiosity; distractibibilty; reckless behaiours; increased sexual energy
What are the most common psychoses with mania?
grandiose; sel-referential; erotic or persecutory
When is the onset of bipolar affective disorser?
late teens or early 20s
What is onset of BPAD over 60 associated with?
treatment-resistance; progressive decline in function and an underlying organic cause
