Mammary gland development and lactation Flashcards
What do lobes have in them
lobules
what do lobules have in them
acini
what do acinus do
epithelial secrete milk and myoepithelial contract and squeeze milk into ducts, exits via pores
What is the first step of the milk let down reflex
Infant suckle and stimulates mechanoreceptors in nipple
What does the suckling do
signal via spinal cord to the hypothalamus
what does the hypothalamus do
release Prolactin-RH and sends a AP to the posterior pituitary to release oxytocin
What does the anterior pituitary do
releases prolactin
what does prolactin do
Stimulates mammary glands to increase milk production, positive feedback mechanism back to infant suckling
what does oxytocin do
shrink uterus
and stimulate contraction of myoepithelial cells to eject milk, positive feedback back to suckling.
