Male Repro: Histology Flashcards
name these layers top to bottom
seminiferous tubules
tunica albuginea
tunica vaginalis
What are the color circles in blue, green, red?
What is the yellow area?
cross-section of seminiferous tubules
interstitial space
label
A: boundary myoid cell (associated with basement membrane)
B: primary spermatocyte
C: Spermatogonium (stem cells)
D: Sertoli cells (hard to tell but they have an ovoid nucleus and their long axis is oriented radially)
E: spermatids
what is the analogy ungrin gave us for sertoli cells?
they are the bouncer; they decide who gets in and out. if you want to get into the “bar” you have to go through sertoli cells and between them are tight junctions
also the bartender: they produce signalling molecules and are actively interfering
secondary spermatocytes have what unique structure?
syncytia, they are all connected (they don’t completely separate so they can exchange stuff with each other)
label starting from the top left going counterclockwise
efferent ducts
epididymis
rete testes in the mediastinum
seminiferous tubules
tunica albuguinea
spermatic chord
label
A: rete testes
B: mediastinum
C: blood vessel
D: straight tubule
E: seminiferous tubules
label
A: epididymis
B: efferent duct
what is this? What are the cilia for?
efferent ductules
the cilia help move things forward
how can you tell that you’re looking at the epididymal duct?
the height of the columnar cells is the same all the way around
what is this structure?
the epididymal duct, ductus epididymus
what is this structure?
epididymal duct–> even though the cells look pseudostratified, there is still one cell/nuclei layer, all the cells are the same height
as you move along the epididymis, the _____ gets thicker and the _____ gets thinner
muscle layer
epithelium
what is this
the ductus deferens–> lots of muscles, lumen isn’t perfectly circular
what is this?
ductus deferens
