1. heat acid in water bath - speeds up reaction between acid and insoluble base
   - do in fume cupboard to avoid releasing acidic fumes
2. Add base to acid - produce soluble salt (and water)
   - only when excess base occur, acid is full neutralised
3. Filter off excess solid to get solution with only salt and water
4. heat solution gently - Bunsen burner
   - slowly evaporate off some water
   - leave solution to cool and crystallise
   - Filter off solid salt and leave to dry
