Q

Why do Group 1 metals get more reactive as you go down the group?

A
  • all Group 1 metals have 1 electron in their outermost shell
  • as you go down the group there are more electrons, meaning the outermost electron is further from nucleus
  • nuclear attraction to outermost electron is weaker because more shielding
  • outermost electron lost more easily, so more reactive

9
Q

Explain why the Halogens reactivity decrease down the group?

A
  • all Group 7 elements wants to gain 1 electron
  • down the group more electron shells
  • outermost electron shell LESS STRONGLY attracted to NUCLEUS
  • harder to attract 1 extra electron into outer shell (atomic radius is larger)
