Group 1 + 7 Flashcards
What are Group 1 elements also know as
Alkali Metals
Describe the reaction of potassium and water?
- moves even faster
- small explosion
- melts into a ball bearing
- lilac flame
What is the symbol equation for sodium and water
2Na + 2H20 —> 2NaOH + H2
Do group 1 element get more reactive when you go down or up the group
Down
Why do Group 1 metals get more reactive as you go down the group?
- all Group 1 metals have 1 electron in their outermost shell
- as you go down the group there are more electrons, meaning the outermost electron is further from nucleus
- nuclear attraction to outermost electron is weaker because more shielding
- outermost electron lost more easily, so more reactive
What are group 7 elements also know as?
The Halogens
What colour and state is Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine
Fluorine - Pale yellow, gas
Chlorine - Pale green, gas
Bromine - Red/Brown liquid , orange vapour
Iodine- Dark Grey Solid, Sublimes into Purple Vapour
The halogens at what D________ molecules
Diatomic
2 Atoms- Sharing electrons to form Covalent Bond
Explain why the Halogens reactivity decrease down the group?
- all Group 7 elements wants to gain 1 electron
- down the group more electron shells
- outermost electron shell LESS STRONGLY attracted to NUCLEUS
- harder to attract 1 extra electron into outer shell (atomic radius is larger)
List some properties of the Alkali Metals
- soft
- dull when exposed to oxygen
- low density
- low melting point
What type of compound is formed when a Alkali metals reacts with a non-metal.
Ionic Compound
