Esters Flashcards
1
Q
what are esters formed from
A
Alcohol and a Carboxylic acid
2
Q
what are esters functional group
A
- COO -
3
Q
methanol + propanoic acid —>
A
Methyl propanoate + water
4
Q
step by process of how to make esters between alcohols and carboxylic acids
A
- add few drops of concentrated sulfuric acids to a boiling tube using a dropping pipette
- Add about 10 drops of **ethanoic acid*
3 Add equal volume of ethanol - Place boiling tube in a beaker of water and place on a tripod
- Heat using a Bunsen Burner until water starts to boil, then turn off
- After 1 minute, remove the tuband allow it to cool
- once cool, pout mixture into a test tube of sodium carbonate solution + mix
- a layer of the estershould form on top
5
Q
what smells do esters often have and what are their properties
A
- Pleasant smells - sweet and fruity
- Volatile - evaporates into gases easily
6
Q
why are esters used in perfumes
A
- due to sweet smell and volatile properties
- evaporates molecules can be detected by smell receptors in your nose
7
Q
what other use do esters have
A
Food flavouring - esters that taste/smell like rum, apple, orange, banana, grapes, pineapples ect.
