What are the effects of Galvanic treatment when machines are turned on?
-galvanic current causes chemical changes by way of direct current
In galvanic treatment, what forms around the anode? And what affects does this have?
-acids form around the anode, which have an astringent affect
In galvanic treatment, what is the effect of the chemical reaction at the cathode?
-chemical reaction at the cathode causes pore to relax
What does the galvanic current generate by way of chemical changes?
-generates a cell-expanding reaction or hyperaemia
What sensations can the client expect during a galvanic treatment?
- metallic taste in mouth due to change in pH of saliva (especially those with a lot of dental work)
- slight tingling feeling
What is necessary while starting the galvanic treatment to ensure successful and comfortable treatment?
- a smooth and gradual increase and decrease of intensity
In esthetics, how many treatments is galvanic current used for? What are they?
Two:
- take advantage of the chemical changes produced when the current is passed through certain solutions containing acids and salts
- take advantage of the chemical effects that are produced when the current is passed through the tissues and fluids of the body
What is Desincrustation?
- comes from the word “incrust”
- This means to form into a crust or hard coating on a surface
- in esthetic treatment it means a more profound cleansing
What is Saponification?
We remove excess sebum and waste matter that covers oily skin by using galvanic current.
- this produces Soda by electrolysis and emulsifies the sebum
- it creates soap suds on the surface of the skin
When should desincrustation not be done?
-should not be performed over broken skin- make sure to not go over blemishes or lesions
What is desincrustation usually used to treat?
- acne
- milia
- comedones
Should desincrustation be used before or after steamer and why?
- Should be used before steamer to ease black head extractions
- can also be done as a treatment on its own with a mask applied afterward
What product is required for desincrustation?
A laboratory prepared desincrustation lotion
-if unavailable us a saline solution of 5 grams of sea salt with a litre of distilled water (alkaline solution formula)

Penetrate an alkaline solution

What is the purpose of desincrustation?
-to soften and breakdown sebum and to begin a drying effect on the oily condition
What is electrolysis?
-when chemical effects are produced by a galvanic current, passed through the tissues and fluids of the body because of the salt content

What are contraindications of galvanic treatment?
- hypersensitivities such as couperose, or if mild sensitivities avoid area
- broken skin or blemishes
- pregnant women, thyroid problems, metal I.U.D *consult their doctor before use
- metal implants of pacemakers
- high blood pressure
- cancer
- dental bridges and fillings will produce a metallic taste *client should bite down on cotton
How often can galvanic current be used and when can it be introduced?
- introduced after 3rd facial
- very bad oily or comedogenic skin, treatment can be done 1X/week for a series of 6 treatments. If required can be done up to 2X/week
What precautions should be followed while using galvanic treatment?
- over treated skin can become flaky and itchy due to the alkaline solution
- to prevent this, frequency of treatments should be determined based of level of sensitivity, as well as making sure to inverse the current from negative to positive to balance the pH of the skin at the end of treatment
What is ionization?
-introducing an element of chemical substances that have been decomposed by electrolysis into the human body
What do we use ionization for in esthetics?
-facilitate a deeper penetration of cosmetic products into the skin
In which part of the treatment should ionization be done?
-should be done on well cleansed skin as a last step of a facial treatment so products can penetrate.
How many sessions of ionization is recommended?
- sessions of 6 treatments twice a year is a preventative measure for dehydration
- twice a week regularly if skin is very dehydrated
What type of products are used for ionization?
- laboratory prepared products such as creams, gels, lotions and ampoules.
- must be water based and of small active molecules.
How do you determine if the laboratory prepared product for ionization os for use with negative pole or positive pole?
- products should be marked whether they ionize with the positive or negative pole.
- Products will also be alkaline or acidic in pH which ill also help indicate which polarity the solution will penetrate with.
What does using 2 ionization electrodes on the face accomplish?
-using 2 ionization electrodes on the face, and by alternating them from negative to positive, we will make sure that even ionization occurred in case we are not sure on what ions the products were produced.
How does ionization carry products through the skin?
- as negative and positive ions attract each other, they will carry the products through the superficial layers of the skin.
- The same occurs when the client holds the negative and the aesthetician holds the positive.
Galvanic Negative will:
-penetrate alkali solutions (negatively charged)
Galvanic Positive will:
Penetrate acidic solutions (positively charged)
Explain how the galvanic negative and positive help penetrate cosmetic products into the skin?
Galvanic negative and positive attract each other. Therefore the active polarity of the substance will be drawn or attracted to by the opposite.
When is ionization introduced?
After the third facial
What type of skin is ionization designed for?
Dehydrated, dry or aging skin
How often should ionization be performed?
- On average, a series of 6 treatments 1X/week, 2X year works well as preventative maintenance
- Skin with very deep dehydration, very dry or aging skin might need a series of 6 treatments 2X a year and additional treatments with facials
How long do you perform the ionization treatment?
Not longer than 5 minutes
At which part of the treatment should ionization be performed? (According to the manual)
-it should be the last treatment, replacing H/F and moisturizer

-as a separate treatment, cleanse, tone with a Lucas, apply ampoule and ionize
What are the contraindications of ionization treatment?
- pregnant women
- hypersensitivity
- high blood pressure
- metal implants
- stop treatment if skin becomes red or client is uncomfortable
- epilepsy
What is micro current?
-an extremely low level of electricity that mirrors the bodies natural electrical impulses
What is micro current used for?
- iontophoresis
- firming/ restores elasticity
- toning (increase muscle tone)
- soothing
- improve blood and lymph circulation
- aid in healing tissue such as acne (because it works with the bodies own natural processes) minimize healing time
- reduce redness and irritation
- improves barrier functions of skin
- increases metabolism
Where in the body does microcurrent travel through?
-It does not travel through the whole body, just in the intended treated area
What are the results of a microcurrent treatment?
-when used in treatments for aging skin, the result may be softer, firmer, more hydrated appearance of the skin
What is the spray machine also referred to as?
An atomizer
What is the use for the spray machine in facial treatments?
- It cools and soothes the skin
- provides fragrance

How can the spray machine help with a clay mask treatment?
-helps soften the clay mask application to aid in their removal
