LYC - The Large Yacht code contains information on how many and what LSA is required on various size yachts.
How many flares / rockets are required?
Burn time?
Not less than 12 rocket parachute flares stowed on or near the bridge,
Liferaft: 6/4/2
Line throwing device: 4 onboard/230m range
Rocket flare: 300m/40s/30,000CD
Handheld flare: 60s/15,000CD
Smoke Signal: 180s/emit highly visible smoke
Size of lifebuoys
LSA Code: Outer diameter of not more than 800mm and an inner diamter of not less that 400mm and be able of supporting not less that 14.5kg in fresh water for 24h.
Minimum 8 lifebouys on cargo ships under 100m long
MOB lifebouy light/smoke -one on each bridge wing - 15min smoke burn time
Amount of lifejackets?
Provided for every person on board and a number of spare lifejackets suitable for at least 10% of the number of persons onboard.
Additional lifejackets shall be provided to personnel on watch/crew of rescue boat
Children lifejackets for every child or infant onboard
Muster list and emergency instructions
Clear instructions to be followed in the event of an emergency in the language required by the Flag State and in English language.
Muster lists shall be exhibited in Bridge, Engine Room, Crew Mess, Crew Accomodation spaces.
Muster lists should detail (SOLAS CH 3 Reg. 37):
-Muster Duties
-Crew Emergency Actions
-Preparation of survival craft
-Manning of fire parties
-Method of Donning lifejackets
-Emergency signals
-Assigned survival craft (equitable crew expereince amongst the craft)
SOLAS Ch 3 Reg 14 - Stowage of Rescue Boats
The rescue boat should be in a state of constant readiness for launching in not more that 5 minutes.
Where utilising painters with ship making headway of up to 5 knots in calm waters. Not required to drill underway
Recovery of persons from the water
All ships shall have ship-specific plans and recovery techniques to recover persons from the water.
Recovery procedures should provide for recovery of persons in a horizontal or near-horizontal position.
LSA Inspections
Weekly: All survival craft visually inspected including conditions of the on/off load release hook. Engines should be run for a minimum of 3 minutes. General alarm shall be tested.
Monthly: All LSA equipment checked and tested
Annual: All LSA equipment serviced
