Masters Familiarisation of the vessel:
Check and ensure the 15 Mandatory Bridge Publications are present
What are they?
(Newly appointed master)
aiWhat are the 15 Mandatory Bridge Publications:
- Weekly Notice to Mariners
- Annual Summary Notice to Mariners
- Chart Outfit of adequate for the voyage of suitable scale include NP5011, Chart Correction Log, Routing Charts, Approach Charts
- Radio Lists
- Light Lists
- Sailing Directions
- NP100 - Mariners Handbook
- Tide Tables
- Tide Atlases
- Nautical Almanac
- Nautical Tables
- IAMSAR Vol 3
- Code of Signals
- M Notices
- Instruction Manuals for all Bridge Equipment / Aids to Navigation
- Ship Captains Medical Book
The OOW has entered restricted visability.
What 10 things would you expect him to do?
-Start fog signals
-Place a helmsman at the wheel
-Reassess safe speed
-Have engines ready for immedate manoeuvre
-Call Master
-Increase the lookout
-Turn on Navigation lights
-Close all watertight doors
-Commence systematic plotting of all radar targets
-Open Bridge wing doors and stop any noisy work in the vicinity
Comply with rules:
* Rule 4-10 particularly 5/6
* Rule 19 - conduct of vessels in restricted visibility
* Rule 35 - sound signals for vessels in restricted visibility
Additionally 1-3, 21-30
Examiner gives you the start of a plot in Fog,
You tell him:
- I have an initial indication of a vessel coming towards me with a small CPA
- However, I have scanty information and must continue the plot
Once you have the full information tell the examiner:
- Which point is ‘O’
- Which point is ‘A’
- Inform him that ‘OA’ is the relative motion line, indicating CPA and TCPA
You can then complete the ‘OAW’ Triangle
- Know what your speed is… and then
- Plot ‘W’
- Describe ‘WO’ indicating direction
- Describe ‘WA’ indicating direction and place vessel at ‘O’
- Once this is done you can apply Rule 19 and inform the examiner of your action under this rule
- He may tell you that you hafve made an alteration of cours and may ask you what affect it will have on the plot!
ICE ACCRETION
- Increased top weight moving ‘G’ up and reducing GM
- Alter course and head for warmer waters
- Alter course and / or reduce speed to best reduce freezing spray from adding to the accumilating ice
- Risk Assess and see if it’s safe for crew to be on deck and remove with steam, rubber hammers etc
- Must report unexpected Ice by all available means
- Nearest coast guard VIA Sat-C
- Must report unexpected Ice by all available means
- NAVTEX Ice reports = Letter C
What is a safe CPA?
&
How often should you plot your position?
- State CPA’s in the masters night orders - not the standing orders as it is too general and every voyage has different circumstances
Rule of thumb for plotting your positon:
- Half the time it would take to get to the nearest danger!
- 6nm from land @ 12kts
- 30 mins to nearest danger (land)
- Therefore fix postion / fixing interval should be every 15 minutes
How would you check the Gyro and Mag Compass?
- Coastal = Transits
- Deep Sea = Amplitudes of sun at sunrise and sunset
- Deep Sea = Azimuth of heavenly body
Crew member caught smuggling
What actions?
- Disciplinary - Gross Misconduct
- Consult Merchant Navy Code of Conduct and deal with accordingly, depending on what has been smuggled
- If there is to be a disciplinary hearing then the crew member needs to be notified in the correct manner
MISC.
- A vessel NUC or RAM can impede the passage of a vessel CBD!
- *Rule 18 (d)(i)**
- A fishing vessel fishing is always length unknown
- A fishing vessel over 50m in length when engaged in trawling:
- Shall show an additional mast head light and may also do so if under 50m therefore always say “Possibly over 50m”
SOPEP Contacts should be updated every ?
LIST OF NATIONAL OPERATIONAL CONTACT POINTS
Should be updated quarterly (every 3 months)
(Latest was 30th Sept next 30 December)
How do you know if ECDIS is approved?
- IMO Wheelmark / UK Conformity Mark (ensign flag)
- Certifcate type of approval
- on Form ‘E’ of the SEC (Safety Equipment Certificate)
- Duplication either with Paper Charts or another stand-alone ECDIS
Details of S52 and S57 Can be found in:
* IHO website * MGN 379 - Electronic Nav Aids
At sea you would expect your OOW’s to do what with regards to ECDIS?
- Ensure the OOW holds the adequate ECDIS type specific and generic certificate however additional training has been offered on his joining of the ship
- He follows the Masters Standing order and Night orders (if appropriate) at all times
- Ensure that the inputs are correct at all times - continually monitor GPS - checking qty of satellites and DOP values and crosschecking against both GPS units
- Ensure ECDIS is setup appropriately with relevant layers, correctly scaled (not over or underscaled) and overlays (AIO, Radar)
- Cross checking the display on the ECDIS by manually plotting position by all available means
- Continually monitor position using PIs
- Avoid over-reliance on ECDIS and be aware of limitations
- Be aware how to manually plot and insert objects (something we do we operating to mark FADs for example)
- Ranges and Bearings of objects on the ECDIS and cross check with the GPS position
- Always comply with rule 5 - lookout

Where does it tell you how to maintain an offical logbook and what needs to be put in it?

What gives you the right as master to Discipline a crew member?
- Because by the seafarer signing their SEA they are signing to say they are in ageement to be bound by the terms and conditions of the Code of Conduct for the Merchant Navy
