Q

Examiner gives you the start of a plot in Fog,
You tell him:

A
  • I have an initial indication of a vessel coming towards me with a small CPA
  • However, I have scanty information and must continue the plot

Once you have the full information tell the examiner:

  • Which point is ‘O’
  • Which point is ‘A’
  • Inform him that ‘OA’ is the relative motion line, indicating CPA and TCPA

You can then complete the ‘OAW’ Triangle

  • Know what your speed is… and then
  • Plot ‘W’
  • Describe ‘WO’ indicating direction
  • Describe ‘WA’ indicating direction and place vessel at ‘O’
  • Once this is done you can apply Rule 19 and inform the examiner of your action under this rule
  • He may tell you that you hafve made an alteration of cours and may ask you what affect it will have on the plot!

Q

What is a safe CPA?

&
How often should you plot your position?

A
  • State CPA’s in the masters night orders - not the standing orders as it is too general and every voyage has different circumstances

Rule of thumb for plotting your positon:

  • Half the time it would take to get to the nearest danger!
    • 6nm from land @ 12kts
    • 30 mins to nearest danger (land)
    • Therefore fix postion / fixing interval should be every 15 minutes

39
Q

P&I club

A

P&I clubs provide insurance for broader, indeterminate risks that marine insurers usually do not cover, such as third party risks. These risks include: a shipowner’s liability after a collision, environmental pollution, rerouting due to stowaways or wreck removal.

Marine insurers are usually for-profit companies that charge customers a premium to fully cover ships and cargo in the time period when the policy applies. In contrast, a P&I club is run as a non-profit co-operative and the insurance is financed by “calls”. Club members contribute to the club’s common risk pool according to the Pooling Agreement’s rules

We use British Marine P&I
