Psychotherapeutics
Therapy of emotional and mental disorders
Biochemical Imbalance Therapy
Mental disorders are associated with abnormal levels of endogenous chemicals, such as neurotransmitters in the brain
Sedatives
Relaxes patient, without producing sleep
Hypnotics
Produces sleep
Anxiety
An unpleasant feeling of apprehension or nervousness caused by perception of potential or actual danger that threatens the person’s security
Anxiety disorder
Abnormal or irrational responses to stressful situations that impairs normal daily functioning
Psychosis
Major emotional disorder that impairs the mental function of the affected individual to the point that the individual cannot participate in everyday life
Epilepsy
Excessive electrical discharge of nerves in the cerebral cortex, may lead to seizures
Parkinson’s disease
Neurological disorder characterized by muscle tremor, rigidity, and lack of coordination
What is stage 1 sleep cycle?
Feelings of floating or drifting, sudden muscle contractions
What is stage 2 sleep cycle?
Muscles relax, easily awakened
What is stage 3 sleep cycle?
Extremely relaxed, difficult to awaken
What is stage 4 sleep cycle?
Decreased movement, groggy or disorientated if woken up
What is stage REM sleep cycle?
Rapid eye movement, vivid dreams or nightmares
Why is REM sleep important?
Most important for you to feel like you got enough sleep
Not enough REM can lead to mental disorders
What can effect REM sleep?
Alcohol and age diminish REM sleep
Major Depression
Feelings of pessimism, worry, intense sadness, loss of concentration and slowing mental processes
Mania
Feelings of intense elation, insomnia, hyperactivity, and irritability (GO, GO, GO)
Schizophrenia
Two or more of the following symptoms during a 1 month period
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganized speech
- negative symptoms
Negative symptoms
Social withdrawal, apathy, poverty of speech, thought blocking
Positive symptoms
Delusions, hallucinations, impulsive behavior, combativeness, disorganized speech, disordered thinking
Causes of seizures
Increased intracranial speech CNS infection Fever Tumors in CNS Head trauma Withdrawal from barbiturates or alcohol Severe hypoxia
Gingival hyperplasia
Gums overgrown onto the teeth
Neurotransmitter imbalance in Parkinson’s
High levels of Acetylcholine and low levels of Dopamine
