Anti-Parkinsons Flashcards
What are Dopamine agents used for?
Relief of tremor and rigidity in Parkinson’s
What is the action of Dopamine agents?
Blocks the reuptake of Dopamine
What is the action of Levadopa (dopamine agent)?
To turn into Dopamine once it crosses the blood brain barrier
What is Carbadopa (dopamine agent)?
Dopamine replacement
What are the side effects of Dopamine agonists?
EPS, on-off phenomenon, hepatotoxicity, orthostatic hypotension, nausea, vomiting, blood dyscrasias
What are COMT Inhibitors used for?
Relief of tremor and rigidity in Parkinson’s, decrease the on-off phenomenon
What is the action of COMT Inhibitors?
Prolongs the duration of Levodopa
What is a consideration we should let our patients know about when taking a COMT Inhibitor?
Take at the same time as Levodopa
What are the side effects of COMT Inhibitors?
GI upset, urine discoloration, increase dyskinesia
What can COMT Inhibitors cause?
Severe liver failure
What are MAO B Inhibitors used for?
Improve memory and motor speed, prevents neuron breakdown
What is the action MAO B Inhibitors?
Reduces the destruction of Dopamine in the brain
What are the side effects of MAO B Inhibitors?
Orthostatic hypotension, ataxia, dyskinesia, hallucinations, dry mouth, EPS, hypertensive crisis with low dosing
What are Anticholinergic agents used for?
Reduce severity of tremors, drooling, and other EPS reactions
What is the action of Anticholinergic agents?
Reduce hyper stimulation caused by excessive acetylcholine
