What is Lithium used for?
Mania and bipolar affective disorders
What is the action of Lithium?
Potentates re-uptake of serotonin
What are the side effects of Lithium?
Dysrhythmias, fatigue, seizures, hypotension, hypothermia, leukocytosis, muscle weakness
What is Lithium contraindicated in?
Dehydration, cardiac or renal disease, diuretics, ACE inhibitors
What should patients watch for when taking Lithium?
Sodium intake
What are traditional antipsychotics used for?
Positive symptoms of schizophrenia, acute and chronic psychoses
What is the action of traditional antipsychotics?
Alters dopamine (decreases)
What are the side effects of traditional antipsychotics?
Acute, long-term EPS, NMS, sleepiness, dry mouth, orthostatic hypotension, weight gain
What should we teach our patients about traditional antipsychotics?
Take with food, assess for cheeking
Avoid hot tubs
Avoid alcohol or CNS depressants
What should we assess for before giving a atypical antipsychotic?
Diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease
What are atypical antipsychotics used for?
Negative and positive symptoms of schizophrenia, acute mania
What is the action of atypical antipsychotics?
Blocks Dopamine 2 and Serotonin 2
What are the side effects of atypical antipsychotics?
EPS, NMS, sedation, orthostatic hypotension, PROLONGED QT INTERVALS, tachycardia, constipation
What should we teach our patients about atypical antipsychotics?
Risk for heat stroke, avoid alcohol or CNS depressants, increased fall risk
