London- urban change city 2 Flashcards
- how does waste affect air pollution
almost a quarter of London’s waste goes to landfill sites outside London. this causes many environmental impacts as the production of greenhouse gases in the environment.
more of London's waste is now recycled or incinerated.
- disadvantages of building on the greenbelt (environmental challenges urban change)
natural habitats may be destroyed
valuable farmland or land for recreation may be lost no existing infrastructure so expensive public transport is worse so more need for cars encourages commuting and therefore pollution encourages urban sprawl
- things removed due to the regeneration project
old factories, industrial estates and homes
derelict and overgrown sites are gone electricity pylons and overhead cables are gone contaminated soil and polluted water ways are gone the ODA aregone
- advantages of building on brownsfield ( urban change challenges and opportunities environmental)
reduces the need for urban sprawl
ground may need to be decontaminated close to existing facilities and servies new development can improve the urban environment sites are not left empty and or dereleict cut commuting and public transport is better in urban areas so reduced the need for cars sites are available since industry declined cheaper to build on due to existing infrasturucture such as roads and electricity.
- how has the environment for Lower Lea valley changed
2500 new homes, half for private rent and a half for affordable rent
a range of homes from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom town houses the site occupies 27 hectares, including 10 hectares of park and public space 55 small independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, a supermarket, and a gym a new school for 1800 students aged 5 - 18 close to bus routes, a new local station and Stratford international station
- should new homes be built on green belt ( environmental challenges urban change)
as the population of London grows and house prices rise, more people move to commuter settlements around London. this forces population and house prices in the rest of south east england to rise too. the problem of urban sprawl has shifted to commuter settlements outside the green belt. cities like reading anf chelmsford are growing rapidly. Urban development in the form of a new housing estates and business parks, encroaches into the surrounding countryside.
- will superhighways help with air pollution
new cycle superhighways planned for London should encourage more people to cycle and reduce traffic and harmful emissions from vehicles. cyclusts have increased from one percent to fifteen percent of road users in London over the past 50 years. the percentage should increase further with the new cycle superhighways. However, areas such as kensigton and chelsea do not want the cycle superhighwats so there will be a highway fee void in the middle of the capital
- why are green spaces needed ( urban change environmental challenges and opportunities)
people enjoy green open spaces and they help us to keep healthy. we use these spaces for walking, running, cycling and for sport.
tree produce oxygen, clean the air, and help to reduce global warming by using carbon dioxide. there are 8.1 million trees in London almost one per person people also use green spaces for growing food. there are 50,000 allotments in London. shared open spaces where people grow their own food. parks, woodlands, and even domestic gardens provide a habitat for wildlife, including birds insects, and mammals, there are 13,000 wildlife species in London
- define the alternative to greenbelts
the alternative is to build on Brownsfield sites in the city.
- how can London be made greener ( urban change environmental opportunities and challenges
encouraging people to feed birds. in winter not paving over gardens
connecting greenspaces we already have to help species migrate naturally. London now has a ‘green grid’ to link open spaces. London also has important wildlife sites, which are designed as sites for importance for nature conservation. these sites protect the wildlife and their green space from development London has 55,25 hectares of designed greenbelt this is green land that cannot be built on and therefore prevents urban sprawl.
- why are there housing shortages in London- Urban sprawl
Londons population is growing by about 100,000 people every year, yet only about 20,000 new homes a year are being built. this has led to a severe housing shortage in London and the rest of southeast England this results in higher housing prices
- how was the 2012 olympic successful due to regeneration project
there was a large area of available land, even though there were also businesses and homes on the site
east London has very good transport connections, particularly strategies station, where most spectators arrived in 2012 London's diverse population made it the natural city to host guests from around the world Newham is the most diverse borough in London the Olympic bid promised to leave a lasting legacy that would help to regenerate east London
- solution to the housing shortage- urban sprawl
one possible solution to the shortage of homes in London is to build outside London on greenfield sites. Building on these sites can lead to urban sprawl and is not very popular with those people already living in the countryside.
- what challenges had to be overcome before the urban regeneration project lower lea valley
existing landowners and users had to leave the site by 2007 some of them protested. the land was brought from them by the ODA
land that was previously polluted by industry had to be decontaminated before building could begin waterways and railways crisscrossed the site, so bridges were built to link the area together
- things that have appeared due to the regeneration project
stunning new sports venues, including the aquatics center, stadium, and velodrome- used by schools
a landscape park with tourist attractions and natural habitats the athlete's village, now converted into a residential community clean soil and waterways the LLDC have taken over from the ODA controls an area including the park and neighborhoods to make the legacy reality
