development in the UK 2 Flashcards
define ports in the UK
Coastal & estuary locations.
• Used to import & export bulky raw materials
and manufactured goods
• Ports also used for passengers e.g. cruises
define airports in the UK
Close to major cities
• Heathrow largest in UK
• Transport of less bulky high value good
what is new-port London gateway
Opened 2013 on
• Thames #estuary
• Accommodates largest container ships in
world, 400m long carrying up to 18 000
containers
• Employs 2000 people, 6000 in logistics park
located nearby
• Brings largest ships closer to London, biggest
market for consumer goods in UK.
EXPAND HEATHROW AIRPORT OR NOT?
Largest airport in UK, it could expand further at a
cost of £18.6 billion. Already operating at full
capacity, 480 000 flights a year.
There is an alternative option to expand
Manchester in an attempt to reduce north south
divide, boost economy in north and provide jobs.
For Heathrow expansion
it will help london compete with rivals like new york and paris
the airport employs 76,000 people and supports a similar number of jobs in london
expansion would boost the UK economy by over 200 billion pounds
against Heathrow expansion
it is already the largest emitter of CO2 in the UK. this will increase when the airport expands
noise polution will get worse for one million people who live below the flight path
one village will be demolished and two others are threatened
for manchester expansion
the airport is further from the built up area so fewer people will be affected by noise
22 million people live within a two hour drive and HS2 will improve connections
it would boost the economy of Northern England
against Manchester expansion
the boost to the UK economy as a whole would not be as grwat as expanding heathrow
london would be less able to compete with rival cities
co2 emissions will increase by 50 per cent if the runways double from one to two
environmental impacts of fuel consumption in the car industry
fuel consumption- most cars run on petrol or disel which ate both obtained from oil, the cause of many environmental problems. brilling for oil uses energy and can endanger ecosystems
shipping oil can cause oil spills
as oil is used up new sources are harder to obtain and can cause more problems
environmental impacts of manufacture in car industry
cars consume a lot of energy even before they are driven it is estimated that manufacturing a car uses as much energy as the car will consume to lifetime on the road
environmental impacts of resources in the car industry
cars are made from a range of resources including steel, rubber, glass, plastic, paint and fabric. manufacturing and transporting these resources also uses energy
environmental impacts of air pollution in the car industry
burning petrol or diesel in cars is a major cause of airpollution. the main pollutants are carbon dioxide nitrogen dioxide and particulates
environmental impacts of disposal in the car industry
environmental impacts of disposal in the car industry
cars end up on the scrap heap at the end of their life. some components like plastic are hard to recycle, other like the acid in batteries can leak into the environment
describe the British empire
British Empire once covered on third of the world. During twentieth century many countries gained independence from the UK. Many of these countries speak English so it aids trade. UK maintains its links with the Commonwealth (former colonies) through trade, culture and migration. Migration occurs to and from the UK and the commonwealth countries.] UK is currently a member of the UK until 2019. Migration from EU to UK is now approaching the same level as non-EU migration.
