liver Flashcards
What is the liver and what is its role in the digestive system?
The liver is the largest accessory gland in the digestive system, playing crucial roles such as detoxification, bile production, and nutrient processing. It is located in the upper right abdomen beneath the diaphragm.
What is the size and texture of the liver?
The liver weighs about 1.5 kg in an adult. It has a reddish-brown color and a soft, spongy texture.
What are the lobes of the liver?
The liver has four lobes:
Right Lobe (largest)
Left Lobe (smaller)
Caudate Lobe (posterior surface)
Quadrate Lobe (inferior surface)
Main cells for bile production, detoxification, and nutrient processing.
Hepatocytes
Leaky capillaries that allow substance exchange.
Sinusoids
Specialized macrophages that help with immune function.
Kupffer Cells
Carries bile away from the lobule.
Bile Duct Branch
Carries nutrient-rich, deoxygenated blood from the digestive tract.
Portal Vein Branch
Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver.
Hepatic Artery Branch
Divides liver into right and left lobes.
Falciform Ligament
Attaches liver to the diaphragm.
Coronary Ligament
Connects the right and left lobes to the diaphragm.
Triangular Ligament
Connects the liver to the stomach and duodenum.
Lesser Omentum
How does the liver receive blood?
The liver receives blood from two sources:
- Hepatic Artery - Supplies oxygenated blood.
- Hepatic Portal Vein - Carries deoxygenated blood rich in nutrients from the digestive tract.
