linear kinetics - lesson 1 Flashcards
define force
the pulling or pushing effect of a body on another body
what can a force do?
get objects moving stop objects change direction of a moving object change speed of a moving object balance another force to keep an object still
what are the external forces?
gravity
friction
air resistance
water resistance
what are the internal forces?
the action of muscles and tendons on the skeletal system
define newtons first law
a body continues in its state of rest or motion unless acted upon by a force
define newtons second law
the acceleration of a body is proportional to the force applied to it and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
force = mass x acceleration
define newtons 3rd law
for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
define inertia
the amount of resistance an object has to a change in an object’s state of motion
- greater inertia = greater force required to initiate movement or change its motion
define momentum
a measure of the amount of motion possessed by a moving object
momentum = mass x velocity
