describe authoritarian coaching
= where the coach makes all the decisions and the players do what they are told
- the coach is very knowledgeable
- the coach is strong and likes to be in control
what are the advantages of authoritarian coaching?
- no time wasted in coming to a consensus on decisions
- players know what is required and where they stand
what are the disadvantages of authoritarian coaching?
- players may become discouraged when they are not able to contribute to decision making
- players may feel the coach is too harsh = players discouraged
when is authoritarian coaching effective?
- safety is an issue or dangerous skills need to be taught
- on game day when time is limited + decisions need to be made quickly
- during pre-season when athletes must meet fitness goals
- when the coach wants to establish authority
- when strict discipline is required
describe democratic coaching
= coach involves players in the decision-making process
- coach guides players toward goals
- players give input
what are the advantages of democratic coaching?
- players feel they have a degree of ownership + more likely to buy in to team direction
- players feel valued by the coach
- coach/team can benefit from different perspectives
what are the disadvantages of democratic coaching?
- requires players to have experience/knowledge to be effective
- decision making is time-consuming and not suitable during in season when match is being played + time is limited
when is democratic coaching effective?
- during in-season to incorporate team in decision making
- during pre-season to select leadership group
- during pre-season where plenty of time for decision making + goal setting
- with an experienced team where players are knowledgeable + motivated
describe laissez-faire coaching
= coach makes very few decisions and allows players to take ownership and make decisions
- coach makes little organized attempts to coach or influence
- coach allows players to work out strategies and patters on play
what are the advantages of laissez-faire coaching?
- creates a casual + relaxed environment
- players take ownership + buy into the direction of the team
- experienced players can be creative
what are the disadvantages of laissez-faire coaching?
- lack of team direction + player development
- decision making is time-consuming
- low skill development with no teaching
when is laissez-faire coaching effective?
- during in season to see who steps up
- during the off-season when players have to take responsibility for themselves
- coach wants to develop players problem-solving ability
- social competitions where are players are experienced and the focus is socializing and having fun
