Limestone Flashcards
Why do we quarry large amounts of limestone rock?
Because it has many uses
What is limestone mainly made of?
Calcium carbonate
What are the three uses of limestone?
As a building material, to make cement and to make calcium oxide
What does the decomposition of calcium carbonate make?
Calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
How is concrete made?
By mixing cement with sand, aggregate and water
What is the reaction called to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide called?
Thermal decomposition reaction
How is cement made?
By mixing clay and limestone in a kiln
What are some other metal carbonates that decompose in a similar way to calcium carbonate?
Magnesium carbonate. zinc carbonate, copper carbonate, sodium carbonate
What to all metal carbonates decompose when heated strongly to make?
A metal oxide and carbon dioxide
What do all carbonates react with?
Acid
What happens when carbonates react with an acid?
They produce salt, water and carbon dioxide
Why is limestone damaged by acid rain?
Because the calcium carbonate reacts with the acid in the rain
What is the proper name for limewater?
Calcium hydroxide solution
What is limewater used to test for?
Carbon dioxide
What happens in a test for carbon dioxide?
If carbon dioxide is present the limewater will turn cloudy
Why does carbon dioxide make limewater go cloudy?
Because the limewater reacts with carbon dioxide to produce insoluble calcium carbonate
What does reacting magnesium with hydrochloric acid make?
Magnesium chloride (salt), water and carbon dioxide
What are the products when zinc carbonate is heated strongly?
Zinc oxide and carbon dioxide
What is produced when water is added to calcium oxide?
Calcium hydroxide
How is calcium hydroxide made?
By adding water to calcium oxide
Is calcium hydroxide an acid or an alkali?
An alkali
What can calcium hydroxide be used to do?
Neutralise acids
What is an example of how calcium hydroxide is used in industry?
It is used by farmers to neutralise acidic soil
What does calcium hydroxide react with to produce?
Calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to produce calcium carbonate
