Bonding Flashcards
What is made when different elements combine?
Compounds
What is formed when a metal reacts with a non metal?
An ion
What happens to the elements in ionic bonding?
The non-metal gains an electron and the metal loses an electron. They are oppositely charged ions so they attract each other to form ionic bonds
What happens to metals in ionic bonding?
They lose electrons to form positive ions
What happens to non-metals in ionic bonding?
They gain electrons to form negative ions
What does a chemical formula of an ionic compound tell us?
The simplest ratio of ions in the compound
What does the formula NaCl tell us
That sodium chloride is made from an equal amount of sodium ions and chloride ions
What is formed when a non-metal reacts with a non-metal?
A molecule
What happens to the elements in covalent bonding?
The atoms share electrons to form covalent bonds
What does the chemical formula of a molecule tell us?
The number of atoms that have bonded together in the molecule
What does H20 tell us?
That a water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
