3.5 Useful Metals Flashcards
Where are the transition metals found in the periodic table?
The central block of the periodic table
What do the transition metals all have in common?
They are all good conductors of electricity
What is good about transition metals?
They are strong but can easily be hammered into shape
What can transition metals be used as?
For building, vehicles, containers, pipes and wires
What is good about copper?
It is a very good conductor of heat and does not react with water so it can be used for pipes and tanks in water systems. It can also be bent
What is copper also used for and why?
For electrical wiring because it is a very good conductor of electricity
What are most of the metals we use?
Alloys
What is bad about pure copper, aluminium and gold?
They are all soft and easily bent
Why are aluminium, copper and gold often mixed with other elements?
To make them harder so that they keep their shape
What is iron used for?
To be made into steel
What is gold used for?
Jewellery, usually as an alloy
What is aluminium used for?
As an alloy in building and in aircraft
What are some examples of copper alloys?
Bronze and brass
