4.1 Fuels from Crude Oil Flashcards
What does crude oil contain?
Many different compounds that boil at different temperatures
Why does crude oil need to be separated to make useful fuels?
Because the different compounds in crude oil burn under different conditions
How do we separate a mixture of liquids?
By distillation
What does simple distillation of crude oil produce?
Liquids that boil within different temperature ranges
What are the liquids produced called?
Fractions
What are most of the compounds in crude oil called?
Hydrocarbons
What do hydrocarbon molecules contain?
Only carbon and hydrogen
What are many hydrocarbons called?
Alkanes
What is the general formula for an alkane?
CnH2n+2
What do we call alkanes and why?
Saturated hydrocarbons because they contain as many hydrogen atoms as possible
