4.4 Cleaner Fuels Flashcards
What does burning large amounts of fuels do?
Releases substances that spread throughout the atmosphere and affect the environment
What does burning any fuel that contains carbon release?
Carbon dioxide
What is carbon dioxide?
A greenhouse gas that causes global warming
What does incomplete combustion of fuels produce?
A poisonous gas called carbon monoxide
What does incomplete combustion of fuels also produce?
Tiny solid particulates that reflect sunlight and so cause global dimming
What two things produce acid rain?
Nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide
How can we remove harmful substances like sulfur?
Before and after they are released into the atmosphere
How is sulfur dioxide removed from waste gases?
From power stations
How is carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide removed?
By exhaust systems on cars being fitted with catalytic converters
What can remove particulates?
Filters
What can be done to fuels before it is supplied to the users?
Sulfur can be removed so less sulfur dioxide is produced when the fuel is burnt
