2.2 Reactions of Carbonates Flashcards
What happens to all metal carbonates when heated?
They decompose to make a metal oxide and carbon dioxide
What do all carbonates react with acids to produce?
A salt, carbon dioxide and water
What can a bunsen burner not get hot enough to decompose?
Sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate
Why is limestone damaged by acid rain?
Because the calcium carbonate in the limestone reacts with the acid in the rain
What is calcium hydroxide called?
Limewater
What is limewater used to test for?
Carbon dioxide
What happens to the limewater if carbon dioxide is present?
The limewater turns cloudy
Why does the limewater turn cloudy?
Because it reacts with carbon dioxide to produce insoluble calcium carbonate
