3.3 Aluminium and Titanium Flashcards
What kind of density does aluminium have?
A low density
Where abouts in the reactivity series is aluminium?
Quite high
What is aluminium resistant to?
Corrosion
What is aluminium more reactive than?
Carbon
What does it mean if aluminium is more reactive than carbon?
Cannot be reduced using carbon
How does aluminium have to be extracted?
By electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide
What is bad about electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide?
It requires high temperatures and a lot of electricity and many stages which makes it expensive to extract
What do aluminium alloys have?
Many uses
What is bad about pure aluminium?
it is not very strong
What is titanium resistant to and why?
Corrosion because it is very strong
What is the density of titanium like?
Low
How can titanium oxide be reduced?
Using carbon
What is bad about reducing titanium oxide using carbon?
The metal reacts with carbon making it brittle
What is bad about extracting titanium from its ore?
It is a process than involves several stages and large amounts of energy so it is very expensive
