secondary data from NICHD study
1364 families
10 sample sites across North America in 1991 from various hospitals
method
-1 month old: kid and fam assessed using observations, questionnaires, and child assessment. (info on background gathered as confounding variables)
-quality assessed using 44 min observation record of caregiving environment (ORCE) at ages 6,15,24,36 and 54 months
-scores over 3 out of 4 indicated high (sensitive, stimulating,exploration)
-at end of toddler period Bayley mental development index used to assess cog
-at end of preschool woodcock-johnson cog and achieve batteries and Preschool language scale(PLS) used to measure language, problem solving, memory and intelligence
results
-high toddler=+cog
- high then low= lose benefits except memory
- high second improves cog, language etc
-high high better than high low on maths and reading ability
-memory linked to toddler maths linked to preschool
