-made by American psychological association in USA (1950s)
-updated every few years DSM 5 now
-contains diagnostic criteria for all mental illnesses
eg 5/9 criteria for depression must be met for 2 weeks
DSM IV description
Uses axis system to diagnose:
-axis 1:clinical disorders
-axis 2: personality disorders + mental retardation
-axis 3:medical issues influencing illness
-axis 4: psychosocial and environmental factors affecting person
-axis 5: Global Assessment of functioning(1-100)
DSM V
changes included
-removing 5 types of Sz
-removing axis system
-removing the clause for bereavement in depression
-combining aspergers+autism= ASD
-Included culturally bound syndromes
ICD 10
-worldwide created by WHO + more common than DSM
-gives diagnostic criteria for ALL illnesses not just mental health
-mental health is Chapter 5 section F
-updated regularly
-criteria varies slightly to DSM
-cross-cultural illnesses+ culturally bound syndromes included
-for each illness it has incident, prevalence, mortality and morbidity(illness rate)

lee 2006
Lee (2006) showed that the DSM was valid in another culture (Korea for ADHD)
so high in concurrent validity as get same diagnosis regardless of diagnosis tool
