-cognitive deficit
-TOM is ability to see world from outside perspective(decentre)
-ASD can’t decenter as can’t understand others view
-TOM normally develops ages2-3 but it doesn’t fully develop in ASD

-difficulty understanding non verbal communication
-systemising
socialising problems
due to difficulty understanding emotions
language delayed
-dont make eye contact so learn language less quick
-communicate less as can’t decanter so assume everyone knows how u feel
should develop2-3 years
explains onset we see, why we notice it early
supporting: sally anne test 1983 wimmer and perner
-kids with ASD unable to correctly predict where sally would look for the ball, based on their own knowledge
-demonstrates struggle to decentre so more credible
supporting: baron Cohen eye test
-showed those with ASD less able to identify emotions when looking at eyes
-demonstrates struggle to decentre so more credible
conflicting:Schick et al 2007
-significant delay in tom tasks in deaf kids born to hearing parents
-suggesting TOm deficit is a result of autism not a cause as it is seen in other language delayed groups-less credible
conflicting:Sheeran et al 2013
-studied high functioning teens and found very little difference in tom tasks to typical, specifically mental state reasoning tasks
-tom is not sufficient
