what is deprivation?

A

-loss of a primary attachment figure
-attachment is broken
-can be ST or LT
-LT can be irreversible

What are the stages of short term deprivation?

A

-protest: kids showed great distress, crying for caregiver and panic stricken
-despair: became calmer but apathetic, showing little interest in anything. Rejecting comfort and self soothing eg thumb sucking
-detachment: coping with separation showing more interest in surroundings but still emotionally unresponsive- avoiding forming new attachments . Showed no interest in caregivers return

How do we reduce effects of LT deprivation?

A

-provide a continuous substitute figure
-Daycare provide key workers for kids to attach to
-reduce time spent away from attachment figure
-Belsky: spend less time in daycare
-Rutter:minimise divorce conflict
-co parenting
-routines
