Q
clinical method
A
- To gather a sample I used google to search for newspaper articles from the guardian and the
sun which were about mental illness using search terms like ‘mental illness’, ‘stigma mental
health’, ‘depression’ etc - I looked through the articles for relevance, length and age of article and filtered out ones
which I didn’t think would be appropriate based on those criteria - This left me with 4 articles- two from The Sun and two from The Guardian
- This was a summative content analysis so I first read through the articles and coded any
interesting terms or phrases about mental illness I found - I counted up the occurences of a number of words e.g. ‘stigma’, ‘illness’ etc and whether they
were ‘positive’ or ‘negative’- these were my overall manifest content - I then read through looking for latent content and understanding e.g. whether a word like
‘sick’ was being used in a positive or a negative way and whether the writer was discussing
their own mental health or passing judgement on others e.g. one article used lots of negative
terms but was doing so to criticise their usage. - I asked another class member to read my articles and conduct the same procedure to test ofinter-rater reliability.
