Lesson 5 - Size a global trait Flashcards
Size
Pg 1-2
- related to movement: expansive or restrained, released or contracted
- determined by the need to move across the page and keep a balance btwn release and contraction w/ the different hand muscles
- copybook = 3mm in height
- small = less than 2.5 mm
- large = 4mm or more
- link between size and intelligence
word proportions
Pg 2
- three zones of a word should all be proportioned
- height of upper zone should be twice that of mid zone
- lower zone should be twice or 2.5 the height of the mid zone
- f is the only trizonal letter
- when people mature they tend to bring the end zones closer to the midzone
- if the length of end zones are too long the writer bites off more then they can chew and desire exceeds that which is practical
Writing size
Pg 2-3
- is linked to perceptions of self and subsequently the type of relationship they have with others and how they view themselves in their environment
- large middle zone letters = those who are impressed by appearances in day to day life
- shows a person’s ability to concentrate
Small writing (midzone less than 2.5 mm in height) Pg 3-4
- often academics
- ability of CONCENTRATION for long periods of time (often to the exclusion of everything else); this is like concentrating looking through a microscope the more concentrated the larger the image gets
- shuts others out from private world
- may not see the whole pic cuz focused on small details
- most comfortable working alone, on own schedule, or w/ limited number of people that share the purpose
- usually chooses to be alone or w/ most trusted friends and limited time spent on social events
- social events leave them feeling foolish, bored, manipulated, isolated, and awkward
- interests seldom match that of the ‘crowd’
- prefers to talk to the point and debates ideas vigorously
- deviates from the norm because they don’t care what others think of them
- has confidence in self and what they do
- is observant and conscientious
- doesn’t need public recognition
- take up very little space/elbow room - plays a modest role
- Concentration means they can block out everything and finds it difficult to refocus if interrupted (dislikes being interrupted)
- gets upset when interrupted, which causes misunderstandings in relationships
- important for this writer to have all the basic rules and directions before they start working to limit amount of interruptions later
- likely to get a lot done in a short period of time
- so focused that other traits can become exaggerated (ie temper becomes major temper tantrums)
- often specialists
- many are good w/ facts and figures
- when width is narrower than height = inferiority complex - especially in interpersonal relationships; feels blocked too quickly and if they feel challenged/threatened they will give up
Small writing caveats
Pg 4
- we all can write smaller than usual if necessary - important to make sure writer has enough space to take up as much room as they’d like
- there is a difference between temporary and habitual concentration - small writing is habitually concentrating
Extremely small writing (mid zone 1.5mm in height)
Pg4-5
- shrinking violet
- too shy
- too intense
- literally screwed up inside
- may have a guild complex
- prefers own company to that of others
- enjoys retreating into shell
- tends to look at the world through a peep hole - only able to focus one thing at a time
- difficulty refocusing after being interrupted; becomes very irritable if forced to shift attention again especially for small matters
- 2 types:
- deep thinker (gather more knowledge or acquire new skills, intensely aware of how much more they have to learn, what they have mastered gives them emotional security and makes them feel more valuable and useful, often they turn to education due to security and respect they feel it will automatically give them, powers of concentration are usually well developed - can make them seem absent-minded prof, focuses so much that all other thoughts are temporarily out of mind, this enables writer to do exacting work)
- disturbed (irrational fear of reality, inordinately strong feelings of inadequacy, feels powerless and unable to deal w/ realities of life, may exaggerate every day happenings since unable to cope w/ them)
- sever self-restriction, mental or emotional problems - or both
- let small writers know they matter - the message was never sent to them
- can be an indication/symptom of Parkinson’s disease - writing begins normally and gradually becomes small and cramped
Average size writing (mid zone around 3mm in height)
Pg 5-6
- majority of people have average size writing
- conventional, conformist (restricts self to accepted limits), realistic, well adjusted
- balances ego demands vs ability to move towards objectives, tasks and challenges
- likes to be active and involved in interpersonal relationships
- afraid to set self apart, but likes to be noticed/recognized (people help fulfill ego needs)
- follows instructions, works well in areas that are familiar
- finds it upsetting when others disregard established rules
- can concentrate when needs to, but prefers to be more spontaneous
- likes to be less involved w/ detail/precision
- aware of the bigger picture
large writing (mid zone 4mm - 6mm in height) Pg 6-7
- has a panoramic view of the world
- numerous interests
- use expansive gestures
- gregarious
- emphasis on self
- thinks as big as they write - wide perspective, but hard to focus on details
- play an active part in their environment
- AWARENESS hard to sit still, needs lots of elbow room, desk job is hard, short attention span, poor listener cuz still focused on self and image)
- uninhibited, self confident, self assured, like to be noticed,
- can be exhibitionists
- professionally: can be in politics, sales, arts, and media
- being noticed doing a good job will make them work harder
- shift projects/subjects easily to match what feels important at the moment
- can multitask (hearing, seeing, doing)
- can appear thoughtless/impatient when they interrupt/demand a refocus to meet their immediate needs
- learns and works by fits and starts - many interruptions (created and allowed)
- the larger the writing = more unconventional and assertive
- when width = height they are confident and capable, will do whatever to enhance ego, thinks in broad terms, competitive, progressive, may be generous in situations that would make it self serving
- width is narrower than height - suffers from anxiety, needs continual assurance, too busy bragging to do anything worth bragging about (which increases uneasiness)
- if distance btwn downstrokes is wide and the writing is large they are social, affable, and needs extra space
Extra large writing (mid zone is 6mm +)
pg 7-8
- needs ego stroked a lot
- feels self-important
- wants to attract attention to compensate for feelings of inadequacy
- dislikes having to do things that they consider beneath them
- thinks of self as superior to others (regards others as incompetent)
- over inflated view of self = superiority complex, feels they can do better than others (does not see that this puts people off)
- feels it a duty to be involved in arranging other’s lives
- feels alone most of the time and does not understand why
- throws weight about
- can belittle the worth of small tasks that would have helped in opportunities of advancement
- when starting something they have a good start, but not always a satisfying finish
- lacks mental control
- finds it hard to communicate logically or concentrate on one thing for any length of time
- biggest problem is lack of information - they think they can handle a situation w/o getting the facts
- refuses to listen to others/ignores advice (no matter how often it is given)
Variable sizes
Pg 8
- at odds w/ self and surroundings
- unpredictable
- uneven size affects writer’s ability to concentrate
- instability and mental confusion
Misc facts
Pg 8-9, 11, 12
-writing reflects how we feel at that given moment - if something tragic just happened they are at odds w/ their emotions, etc
-we judge ourselves as the norm: those who write smaller = introverts, those who writer bigger = over the top
-first and last letters of words have special significance: first letter is the way we want to be perceived by others (and intention before acting) and last letter portrays their standpoint (the decision the writer arrived at
-thus we conclude middle letters illustrate the process of thinking from first intention to final decision. this whole process shows if the writer carried out their intentions
(shows if reliable, cooperative, arrogant, etc)
*if last letter is legible and in proportion = came to a clear and trustworthy decision
*last letter illegible/neglected/thready = acts as a warning of unpredictable actions
*last letter noticeably taller = has an opinion and insists on it
-anything that seriously reduces the speed of writing means the writer is inefficient, hesitant, or lacking in good judgement and taste. they could have negative qualities of tall + broad capitals or just want to appear different to make an impact on society (whether they do this in an effective way is another matter). it is necessary to find out what makes people write the way they do and why they feel it necessary to create a certain impression
*when capitals move away from copybook height it shows the writer has different attitudes towards authority; as well as representing our social image (birds poof up to look bigger than they are, etc)
Writing decreases in size at the end of words
Pg 9
- most usually seen in the letter m, but can be found in whole words
- suggests an ability to empathize or manipulate on a subtle level
- uses tact, DIPLOMACY (saying the right thing w/o offending), and discretion
- if letters become thready the writer is working towards compromise and a peaceful solution
- I to YOU can show that show starting w/ confidence and becoming modest and subdued
Writing increases at the end of words
Pg 9-10
- likes to have the last word
- moving I to YOU in a manner that puffs self up to compensate for inferiority feelings
- modestly goes across the page and then announces their arrival w/ trumpets
- verbally blunt person, lacks tact, inconsiderate, wants to express feelings strongly, suggests an aggressive stance
Capital letters
Pg 10
- combine the upper and mid zones
- represent the social image, our attitudes to society and (in a limited way) whether we act the way we really feel
- self image/SELF ESTEEM (the value a person places on self) may be reflected in the size of the capitals
- show us the writer’s front, how they want to be looked at, their intentions, and pretensions
Copybook capital
Pg 10
-should be written slightly larger than the mid zone letters
