Lecture 6 - more on spacing: words and lines Flashcards
Arrangement
Pg 2
- refers to the distribution of the black strokes on white background
- distance btwn words/lines disrupts writing movement, the larger the space the greater the disruption
Word spacing
Pg 2
- represents the relationship btwn I to YOU - the desire for sociability
- significant in terms of thinking; the way words and spaces are written reflect a picture of how we are thinking
- balanced spacing represents logical thinking
- (positively) wide word spacing means they can deal w/ several topics at once (negatively) widening of word spaces shows collapse in thought
- words narrowly grouped thinking and action follow in quick succession - does not allow time for reflection and nobody can persuade otherwise
- wide word spaces are becoming more and more frequent
Distance btwn lines
Pg 3
- give a structure to the whole page (more important than distance btwn words)
- made w/ more conscious awareness than word spacing
- indicates need for social contact/aloofness
Narrow line spacing
Pg 3
Positive connotations:
- need for social contact
- intimacy
Negative connotations:
- tactless
- intrusive
- not enough time to coordinate thoughts (too much of a hurry)
Wide line spacing
Pg 3
Positive connotation:
- dignity
- tact/diplomacy
- sensitivity
Negative connotation:
- arrogance
- class conscious
Wide line spacing + wide word spacing
Pg 3
- complete inability to make social contact - a very unhealthy situation
- distances self from outside world due to loneliness(if they can cope in this situation then they have mastered feelings of inner isolation)
- clear insight into self and dignified reserve towards others
- likely to have the capacity for social contact w/ those they like or admirers of their intellect
- if loneliness is due to inability to form friendships then they are distant; arrogance and haughtiness is a cover-up for inner shyness; they want to stay distant to remain objective, but inner conflict makes them self relect and dissect the cause of conflicts
wide line spacing + average word spacing
Pg 4
not much of a problem since it points to emphasis on external distance while the desire for contact still exists (similar to average line spacing + narrow word spacing)
wide line spacing + narrow word spacing
Pg 4
- wide line spacing means clarity still exits in the mind, but also has the desire for social contact
- if baseline is straight the writer is determined to establish social contact - maintains tactful distance that makes them successful
- lack of pauses btwn words enhances chanes for success since they need to keep the conversation flowing to keep social contact
- may need social contact due to the pleasure it brings or for devious motives
- *further analysis is needed to discover why the writer needs social contact
Average line spacing + Average word spacing
Pg 4
balanced individual w/ clarity of thinking and a healthy personal inregration - as long as the flow of movement is steady, distribution is well proportioned throughout and no sudden irregularities of spacing in line and word
Narrow line spacing + wide word spacing
Pg 4
- very rare: when word spaces are proportionately wider than the line distances then there is a problem
- needs social contact but unable to establish contact; inner emptiness that needs worth affirmed by others; makes them become intrusive and tactless
- when lines are not extremely narrow compared to word spacing then it is more positive: they have mastered inner loneliness, but the narrower the line spacing = suffering because of inner loneliness
Narrow line spacing + narrow word spacing
Pg 4
- harmonious distribution in arrangement w/o collisions, touching or disturbances - motivated to seek out social contact since they have much to give (especially when stroke quality is heavy)
- likely to have predominance of sensuous perception w/ pictorial (not abstract) thinking
- lack btwn lines could = lack of sensitivity and insight towards self and the world at large - unaware of how others see them since they do not give themselves enough distance to gain objective perspective
