Describe a horse halter
Usually heavy nylon or leather. Encircles the head with a noseband and throat latch.
What is a horse cradle?
Series of bars tied together like a non-rigid fence around the neck of the horse to form like a loose splint. Works like an E-collar.
What is a lip twitch?
Usually a long wooden handle with a loop of rope or stainless steel chain at one end. Oldest and most simplest restraint for horses. Designed to stimulate the nerves, creates a small amount of pain to distract a horse undergoing minor procedures.
What is a hobble for horses?
A leather strap fastened around a horses leg to restrict movement. Can keep a horse from kicking, most vets prefer chemical restraint for a particularly aggressive horse.
What is a stock?
narrow enclosure that partially immobilizes a horse for treatment.
What is a blindfold used for in horses?
May calm a particularly frightened or unmanageable horse.
Where is the WORST place to approach a horse from?
From the rear - prime position for a kick!
Where do you properly approach a horse from?
From it’s left side near the shoulder/neck.
How far back can a horse kick?
6-8 feet straight back
What is a chain shank?
A long leather lead or rope with 2 foot length of chain and a snap hook on one end. Can go over the nose or under the lip. Used as a distraction
What is cross tying?
Helps keep the horse from turning or rearing up. Two ropes attached at the halter and tied to cross-tie rings on the barn or stall area.
What is tail tying?
Tail are quite strong and sometimes need to be out of the way, you can also use this to move the horse. Never attach tail -tie to fixed object, should only be attached the animal’s own body
What is a foal?
Young horse under one year old
How often should a horse in travel get water?
every 4 hours and feed as it’s normal schedule
How do you approach a cow?
slowly and from the left side, like a horse
