Lesson 2 Handling and Restraint Section 1 Flashcards
What are the 3 main categories of restraint techniques
1) Manual 2) Mechanical 3) Chemical
Describe Manual Restraint
Simply using your hands to hold the animal in the desired position but never forcefully. *Distresses the animal least for physical exam and minor procedures
Describe Mechanical Restraint
Uses equipment such as leashes, collars, restraint bags and poles. Tends to upset the animal so only used when absolutely necessary. Mostly designed per species.
Describe Chemical Restraint
Sedatives, tranquilizers, and anesthetics. Considered the least desirable method. While extremely aggression or frightened animals may require chemical restraint, these agents can interfere with diagnostic treatment and complicate diagnosis by masking symptoms.
