the paleolythic hypothesis
by Patrick C. McGovern
wine can occur “spontaneously” - you don’t need anything but what’s in the environment for wine production
what is the thought process behind the paleolythic hypothesis?
ancestors tried to harvest and collect grapes - they would break, and the juice would fermentate with contact with air
wine can happen spontaneously but its not…?
natural - it is artificial and a middle product of turning grape juice to vinegar
what is the “path” of wine
grape juice –> wine via fermentation –> vinegar
when does archaeological evidence show that grapevine was domesticated?
more than 10k years ago
where does archaeological evidence show that grapevine was domesticated?
the Near East
the development and domestication occurred together?
development of ceramics and domestication of grapevine
why did the development of ceramics and domestication of grapevine occur together?
ceramics were used to store wine for longer so it wouldn’t turn into vinegar because its an airtight container
was grapevine the only fruit that was being fermented?
no but it would be most popular due to ‘wild’ yeast
wine jars from where and when were shown to be mixed with tree resins to delay acetification?
from 5400 - 5000 BC in Iran
what were wine jars from 5400-5000 BC in Iran shown to be mixed with? and for what?
mixed with tree resins to delay acetification
wine jars from 6000 - 5800 BC found in Georgia had..?
no resin
wine jars from when and where were found to have no resin in them
6000 - 5800 BC in Georgia
