What is a grade II listed building?
- It is a building which is considered nationally important
- Grade II listed buildings make up 92% of all buildings
How would you find out if a building was listed?
Historic England website and search the listing
What are the different grades?

What is DEFRA?
- Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
- DEFRA is responsible for improving and protecting the environment
What is Listed Building Consent?
It is the mechanism in which planning authorities ensures that any changes to listed buildings are appropriate and sympathetic to their character
Are there any other forms of consent required when working on listed buildings?
Certificate of Lawful Development
What is a Certificate of Lawful Development?
- It’s a legal document stating the lawfulness of past, present and future building use, operations and other matters
- If granted, enforcement cannot be carried out against the development
What is the required documentation for a Listed Building Application?
- The application form (Planning Portal)
- Heritage Statement
- Drawings
- Description of existing and proposed materials
- Supporting Documentation:
Photographs, surveys, reports and supporting statement from the Conservation Officer
What is an impact statement and why was it required?
- To identify the important characteristics/significance of the existing heritage asset
- To explain why the proposed changes are necessary
What is a grade I listed building?
- It’s a building of exceptional interest
- Only accounts for 2.5% of all listed buildings
