Lecture28: Parathyroid Pathology Flashcards
What is Primary Parathyroidism?
Increased PTH secretion due to a parathyroid lesion
What is Secondary Parathyroidism?
Compensatory increase in PTH secretion
What is Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism?
A persistent PTH hypersecretion after the hypocalcemia is corrected even
3 causes of Hypercalcemia?
Paraneoplastic syndrome, primary and secondary Hyperparathyroidism
What 3 things cause Primary Hyperparathyroidism?
Parathyroidal adenomas, carcinomas, and hyperplasia
Parathyroidal adenoma’s are limited to one gland?
Yes
Parathyroidal Hyperplasia involve all 4 glands?
Yes
Hypoparathyroidism is caused by?
Removal during thyroidectomy, congenital or autoimmune
Hypoparathyroidism presents as?
Tetany, spasms and tingling
In Hypoparathyroidism lab findings, what does it show?
Decreased serum calcium and PTH
Metastatic Calcification, describe it entirely
Elevated calcium levels, it deposits on healthily vessels and kidneys, associated with Hyperparathyroidism ofc.
Dystrophic Calcification, describe in its entirety
Normal calcium levels, deposits on dead tissues, not associated with Hyperparathyroidism
