Lecture on Ch. 23 (incomplete, so supp w book) Flashcards
What are the three branches of the apical meristem?
the protoderm meristem
the procambion meristem
the ground meristem
The dermis (tissue system) comes from what meristem?
the protoderm
the Vascular system comes from what meristem?
the procambion
The ground tissue system is from which meristem?
the ground meristem
The xylem and the phloem are example tissues of what tissue system?
the vascular system
What is primary growth?
growth that results from cell division in the primary meristem.
What is secondary growth?
growth that results from cell division in the secondary meristem.
What is the primary cell wall?
it is laid down at the exterior of all plant cells.
what is the secondary cell wall?
it is interior to the primary cell wall in some cells.
What is a tissue? (no, not for your nose.)
group of cells that perform a common function, performing tasks that individual cells are not capable of on their own.
What is a tissue system?
connections of tissues between organs.
What are the functions of the epidermis in plants?
covers the plant keeps pathogens out keeps moisture in storage directs movement defense (trichomes) regulates gas exchange through guard cells which open and close stomatal pores.
What is a stomata?
a core with two guard cells
What are the functions of trichomes?
reduce water loss
reduce excess sunlight
reduce herbivory
have glands to attract or repel (ex: fragrance of flowers)
