Classification Flashcards
Why do we use classification?
millions of species exist. Many have multiple common names. Latin is used as a method to standardize names so everyone knows which plant is being discussed.
What is the definition of a species?
biological species: groups of actually/potentially interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other groups.
What is a taxon?
a given label for any step in the hierarchy.
Name the taxonomic hierarchy in order beginning with Domain.
Domain. Kingdom. Division (phylum). Classes. Orders. Families. Genura. Species.
What are the three major Domains?
archaea, bacteria, and eukaryote.
What are the three rules discussed in taxonomic naming?
- capitalize all but specific epithet.
- Genus and species are italicized or underlined if hand written.
- species is (Genus and specific epithet.) Ex: Homo sapien.
Division names in plants end in…
ophyta.
class names end in…
opsida.
order names end in…
ales.
family names end in…
aceae.
What are the six kingdoms?
Bacteria, Archaea, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, and Plantae.
Protista, Fungi, Animalia and Plantae all belong to which domain?
eukarya.
What three kingdoms reproduce with only binary fission?
bacteria, and archaea.
Protista reproduces by what methods?
binary fission, basic mitosis, and others.
Fungi reproduce by what?
zygotic meiosis, in which the only diploid cycle is the zygote, and the only multicellular stage is haploid.)
