Lecture 7b Flashcards
Allow movement
Excitable (respond to stimulus)
Contractile
Muscle Tissue
Three types of muscle tissue:
Skeletal
Cardiac
Smooth
Attached to the bones and contractions makes possible locomotion, facial expression, posture, and other involuntary movements.
Skeletal muscle
Percent of body mass composed of skeletal muscle
40%
Forms that contractile walls of the heart
Cardiac muscle
Cells of the cardiac muscle
Cardiomyocytes
Principal characteristic or cardiomyocytes
They contract on their own intrinsic rhythms without any external stimulation
Cardiomyocyte attach to one another with specialized cell junctions called
Intercalated discs
Rhythmically sets off a wave of electrical excitation
Built-in pacemaker
Able to contract rhythmically and independently
Autorhythmic
Responsible for involuntary movements in the internal organs
Smooth muscle tissue contraction
