lecture #7 viruses Flashcards
what is the classification of a viruse
obligate intracellular parasite
what are viruses
not alive
cannot reproduce
not made of cells
what does OBLIGATE intracellular parasite mean
cannot reproduce or carry out metabolic activities (do not have ribosomes) without the host
Do viruses have RNA or DNA
they can haver EITHER RNA or DNA, but not both at the same time
how do viruses infect
they are host specific, have specific receptors where they bind (like a key in a lock), they then use the machinerie of the host cell (to get into a cell, must have receptor for that specific cell)
what takes over the cell?
Viral nucleic acid
how do viruses replicate
take command of hosts metabolic pathway and direct it to make a new copy of the virus, once the viral nucleic acid and protein coat are made, virus assembled and released
can antibiotics kill a virus
no, can only kill bacteria, only works for living things
what happens when anitibiotics are over-used
bacteria becomes more resistant to the antibiotics, and so stop working
do vaccines work for viruses
yes, work for viruses and bacteria
how do vaccines work
inject either a part of the pathogyne or dead pathogyne so body an build antibodies, and white bloos cells can act of the pathogyne right away if there is futur infection
